V70 XC break issue 1998

I was driving my 1998 V70XC yesterday when I noticed the brake pedal was "soft", that is, at a stop the pedal would continue to depress until it hit the floor. After 10-15 miles of driving, including one sudden stop, the brake warning light came on and there is no breaking unless I depress the pedal to the floor. What is happening?
