Repelling Rodents--Any Suggestions 200 1992

I have my son's 92 GL parked in my yard while is he out of town for at least a year and a half. I religiously start the car up every week and let it run. Well, when I went out the past Sunday to start it up, crank, crank, crank and no turnover. Checked all fuses and then opened the hood and saw rat droppings and a nest that this sucker had built in the plastic pan the covers the underbelly.

Ok, now at least I know I am probably looking for chewed wires. After about 45 minutes of careful searching I saw where this SOB had chewed completely through a couple of wires that went to the coil! I soldered the wires and removed the belly pan(and left it off) and all is well.

So the question is how do I keep this visitor from turning his car into a rat motel? I live in the foothills of Albuquerque and these things are known as desert rats.

Traps do not seem to work with these rats. They will set them off, but seem to evade getting caught!
