windshield wipers 200

hello again,

1989 240 DL wagon

just as i got my centre bearing and drive shaft disaster back in order.

i started to hear a noise when the windshield wipers were on. sounded like a rough running motor, or at least something rough kind of like an interference noise you would hear growling through the radio when you have a bad relay or ignition wires, only the radio wasn't on. .. (just to describe the noise) ... anyway the next day the problem went away and the wipers sounded fine. .. then the following day it was raining and the wipers stopped working altogether. ..

any ideas where to look ?
the fuses are fine.

i'm not excited about going up under the dash to pull the wiper motor.

is there a chance this is a relay ?

what else would be on that relay so i could rule this out ? Radio ? rear wiper ? (they both work)

i'd say it was a wiring problem... except for the strange growl that preceded the death of the wipers by a couple days.
