780 hot start puzzle 700 1989

hello-
i am still (slowly) trying to determine what is causing my poor hot start. rundown:

-when trying to restart, after the first crank or two it almost fires and then continues to crank.
-generally it will start eventually and i need to keep my foot on the gas pedal in order for it to stay running.
-sometimes i will have to open the hood to let it cool down a minute because it will stall out even with foot on pedal.
-i have replaced the fuel pump check valve (few weeks ago) and IAC motor (today) and am still suffering the same symptoms. i also swapped out ECT from previous engine (no hot start issues) with no success.
-i checked the fuel pressure regulator vacuum line for fuel and found none.

where should i go next? i do not want to chance dumping any more money into a part that does not need to be replaced.
