jerky odometor 200 1988

when i got my 88 the odometer didn't work so i got a gear out of a junkyard car and put it in. old gear had 2 teeth missing and seemed to be stuck in the clear plastic so i cleaned it out and put it back together, seems to work fine but the numbers don't roll in the smooth fluid fashion that the mechanical odometer in my 85 had, also my shift light is staying on all the time, iam guessing the blue wire controls that light?
