My 1987 745 quit running while travelling down the highway last week. All indications are that it's a failed cam or crank position sensor, as the same thing occurred on my wife's 1989 744 a couple of years ago and replacing the crank position sensor, on top of the tranny bell housing, did the trick. However, my 745 does not have a crank position sensor on the bellhousing. There is a plug-in connector below the distributor at the back of the engine, in line with the cam. I have searched for a "cam position sensor" at ipd and other parts suppliers and have yet to find such an animal. Am I correct that my '87 has a "cam" position sensor and not a "crankshaft" position sensor, like my wife's '89?
About the '87: within the past year, it's gotten new plugs, wires, distributor cap & rotor, fuel pump & filter, and fuel injectors. Although it has 364k miles, I have never replaced the cam position sensor in the 200+ miles I've put on it since buying it, and that's my prime suspect (it gets spark and fuel). The wife's '89 had its crank sensor fail at around 280k (it's is still a very frisky 323k-miler), so it lasted quite a while.
