Never to my knowledge had tranny fluid change 200

My girlfriends 240 (88) has 200,000 miles and has never to my knowledge had its trans fluid changed. The fluid is still red. Should I change it along with filter, or am I asking for trouble. It runs and shifts like a dream. I hear changing the fluid might cause problems and then I have heard that this is a myth. What should I do. I definately do not have the money to change the transmission.
