hiss/groans behind dash 700 1989

1989 780 turbo.

hiss behind dash: removed the glovebox and i think i narrowed it down to this diaphragm unit that looks like 4 black tennis balls. when i remove the vacuum line attached to it and cover the line with my thumb, the hiss goes away (i hear it when accelerating, turning car off, and changing heater controls). for the most part, anyway-sometimes i could still hear a hiss, but less frequently. i traced the vacuum line as far back as i could-it connects with a connector to two other white lines that snake back out of sight. anyway-is this diaphragm replaceable? what about those vacuum lines?

also, without any real pattern, i sometimes i hear a groaning/clicking from behind the dash. any ideas?
