O2 sensor theory 700

I have been racking my feeble brains trying to figure out how the O2 control works. The sensor apparently goes from high to low at about 1 Hz or faster(?) frequency. So what is the a? My theory is that the sensor comes calibrated with a very small range (say 2-3% O2 full scale) so as long as it is withinn that range, all is OK. So sort of digital control, not analogue. Am I right?
