soft brake pedal on 87 740 700 1987

After sitting undriven for 6 months, the brake pedal goes almost to the floor - it used to be hard after a couple of inches of travel.

I replace the front pads and checked calipers - all looks OK - pedal is still soft. There are no signs of leaking brake fluid.

When the engine is not running, the pedal is firm, with little travel.

What should I be checking at this point - master cylinder ? I haven;t checked the rear brakes - could a frozen rear caliper cause this ?

thanks - Jim
