Those brass plugs are made to be taken out with a ΒΌ" square tool. I have NEVER been able to
get one out with such a tool. I usually have drilled them and used a screw extractor ("Ezy Out")
to pull them, one of relatively few applications in which the tools work as advertised.
I suspect they use brass plugs because they are easy to drill......
I always replace them with allen pipe plugs, which work well. I use a couple wraps of
Teflon tape and don't tighten them TOO tight.
