240 Speedometer question 200 1988

Speedometer was working on my '88 240, so, I took out the cluster to remove the compensation board. After re-installation, temp works fine now, but the speedometer stopped. I took the cluster out (thinking I didn't have it installed correctly), all was good. I cleaned the "L" connector, put all back -- still no good. I then tried another extra 10042 code speedometer that I had, and still no good.

Now I did see I have an "extra" solid orange wire that I don't remember seeing on the uninstall. All other guages work as well. Haven't tried the lights.

Does the board think it is the sender in the rear-end? If so, how big a pain is this? I think I have another sender in a donor car that I can try (1990). Ideas are welcome -- even if it is to tell me how dumb I am to miss something obvious!

thanks as usual!
