Grinding/Vibration when shifting from 1st to 2nd gear 900 1996

Hello All,

I have a 1996 960 with 208k miles. I've been noticing a grinding/vibration upon hard acceleration when the auto transmission shifts from 1st to 2nd gear. It's been going on for a few months, and I thought it was simply something shifting around in the trunk, but I ruled that out. This weekend, I was in the mountains and had to go up a steep driveway. I shifted down to 1st and it vibrated badly all the way up the hill. So I've read around this site and found potential ideas being the driveshaft U-joints or transmission tailshaft bearing. Do my symptoms sound like either of those issues or something else?

Thanks,
Chris Eaker
