To not hijack Volvodad's thread I'm commenting here on Dave's message below.

I tried and had little success with adblock - but I don't remember it stopping cookies/ data mining.

I got rid of IE ASAF too but last month FF became intolerable - hanging, 100% CPU, couldn't stream videos. 4+ hours of trying FF-suggested fixes did nothing. Safe mode was the same./ So I switched to Chrome.

I use Adblock plus for Firefox, it eliminates 99% of all adds unless you allow them. You can set specific pages or domains to allow adds.

For example Gmail detects tracking numbers in a confirmation email and makes a clickable link for tracking. This feature confuses adblock so I allow adds on my Gmail account.

Haven't used IE in years, haven't missed it either.
