m46 not shifting, shifter completely loose 200 1982

my transmission seems to have completely crapped out on me.

So first some background: I was driving home from the store, and went to shift from 1st to 2nd and nothing, the shift lever dropped down to where second should have been but it was still sitting in neutral. So thinking it maybe didn't slide all the way in gear, attempted to bring it back up to neutral and down to second, by the time I pushed it into neutral the whole assembly was limp. I coasted to the side of the road side of the road to have a look at the car.

The shift lever now freely moves all around, with some slight points of resistance pushing the leaver forward and backward. its range of motion has greatly increased as well. Pulling the shift boot back it looks like the rod that goes forward into the transmission is still connected to the shifter itself(it moves when I move the shifter) so I don't think its the connection there. ?I don't know if there are any other failure points outside the transmission that could be the culprit. I'm afraid that something may be broken within the transmission itself, and I'm a bit out of my depth here, any help would be appreciated.
