Weird OverDrive Behavior of 1983 242 200 1983

I have a 83 242 with over 200K miles (can't say exactly how many because the odometer died many years ago). A long while back, the OD indicator light quit working. I presumed that this was just the lamp bulb since the OD seemed to work fine. I never bothered to replace the bulb (for the same reasons that kept me from fixing the odometer - laziness and not wanting/liking working under the dash). Anyhow, over the past 3-4 months, there are times when the OD refuses to kick-in for some reason. If I persist at trying, it will eventually kick-in and all seems fine from then-on until it happens once again maybe a week later. Well, the other night the OD was doing its refusal to engage thing and I kept at it. Not only did the OD kick-in but I was amazed to see the indicator light illuminated for the first time in many years. So now I know that the bulb is not the issue with the indicator and wonder what else might be going on here. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!
