1986 240 DL annoying rattle in front end 200 1986

Hi all-

I need your expertise on a rattle. Keep in mind that the car has 270+...

It is on the left side- when I drive through patchy parking lots or on a gravel road- I have checked: ball joints, bolts holding control arm cowling to frame, sway bar linkages, etc. One time I actually found that on of the three bolts holding the rear control arm cowling to the frame was stripped. I replaced it and found that the noise went away for a couple of weeks. Then it returned and I could not see that the new bolt had stripped.

I have tried to recreate the sound by trying to wiggle the front left tire, jacked and unjacked.

It sounds kinda like a bolt is loose- I even removed the left strut assembly and had a look at that- though I could not loosen the castle nut on the top. Everything seemed tight and not too worn out.

Are there bolts that hold the whole front end to the chassis? Someone an another board mentioned that once but I cannot find them.

Any thoughts?

thanks in advance..
