Um; where to start. Brakes are important, I guess we can say that.
What you have described is that when you pressed the brake pedal, the car did not slow at all or exhibit any sign of having brakes, but only jumped sideways, like the pedal engaged a sideways switch instead of brake pads, is that about right?
The vacuum boost affects all parts of the hydraulic brake system at the same time, in the same way, so it's unlikely that the booster is the issue.
There is a 'master cylinder' with lines that run to each wheel and carry fluid; if the car pulls to one side, that side is getting more, or the opposite side is getting less, affect from the master. Do you know if your car as anti-lock? that vintage, some did, some didn't. Do you have any idea of the condition of the brake pads? If one or some were quite thin, or if the pad material came off, the plate could get stuck in the caliper, or other rare but possible things.
The driveshaft is split, is a two piece; the rear part of the front section is supported in a rubber bushing, so some movement is appropriate.
Have you considered acquiring a manual for the car? Haynes aren't bad, and even Chilton's is not always wrong.
