Tire tread depth

Winter is coming so I took a good look at my tires. The wear bars are getting pretty close to the top of the tread, about 1-2mm. I don't have a gauge to do accurate measurement.

I expect to only travel 3-4,000 miles this winter, mostly local. Should I spend $900 for 4 new tires before Turkey Day, or will I be 'safe' through the winter?

I posted over here because of the tire knowledge, eventhough the vehicle in question is AWD with all-season tires. I seldom drive with fresh snow on the roads, but there is plenty of ice/packed snow from DEC-MAR.

Thanks,

Klaus
