front bearing on m46 bad. Is this a doable fix? 200

I'm reasonably certain that the noise and wobble of my input shaft in neutral (disconnected) is the source of a metallic scraping sound coming from my transmission (especially with clutch disengaged and in neutral). I'm in the middle of volvo nowhere and I'm not going to be able to locate a used m46 with much ease. Is the replacement of the front bearing a doable fix? i rebuilt the od on this tranny a few years back with the help of duane. I am fairly mechanical and relatively fearless. I do not want to put in the new clutch to find that the problem was not the clutch.

1. is this a reasonable repair without a total rebuild and possibility of no working unit in the end/
2. do i punt and look for a used tranny?
3. is it possible that the mechanical scraping noise was due to the clutch, or some other thing, and a somewhat flexible not too quiet input shaft is a normal thing when this unit is not attached?

I searched this board for just this repair and didn't find too much.

thanks for your advice.
