hard/non starting 85 245 200 1985

So I replaced the clutch, rear main and oil pan recently. removed the engine and transmission in the process.

now I have everything back in, but the car is struggling to start. Everything appears to be hooked up and I was told the battery was fine too. And I know it runs as I have gotten it started a few times (and it runs as it did prior to the operation).

It doesn't "click click click" like what I think a dead starter sounds like, but it's like a slow "whirrr....whirrr.....whirrr".

I have the main battery on charge, and I jumped it with my truck (and it did start that way).

I'm hoping it's a bad battery (in need of a charge like nobodies business) and not something else.

What are the symptoms of a dying starter?

on another note: It's funny how you can clean your engine, and when you turn it on it smokes a bit (melting gunk I guess). OR I have an exhaust leak.

The battery
