Arm rest (aftermarket) question 200

I just got an armrest from eBay.. the kind that goes between the front seats. Nothing fancy, just the foam with a cover model, not the fancy hard plastic ones with cup holders... Anyways, my question is, can those be custom made for different models? I have an 89 245 and it seems to fit really snug. Too snug. So snug it broke the e-brake cover.. Well, the e-brake cover was broken to begin with, but this kind of pushed it over the top. Seems like the width of the arm rest is kinda skinny. Is it possible the 78-85 models have a smaller e-brake cover? Did I get one made for an older model?
I'd like to replace my e-brake cover, but not if this arm rest is going to break it. What's a good plan, put it in a vice, and hopefully bend it equally on both sides to get a little better fit? Seems like a lot of jagging around. Has anyone else met this problem?
