How do you remove the inner handle on a '59 duett? 444-544

I'm trying to get behind the wood to remove the old sound-deadener & put in modern sound-deadenr.
I see a previous owner chipped away at the trim ring around the handle & I can see a hole in the handle. There is no cotter pin. Not sure what to do with the hole to remove the pin?
