Impending blower motor job, what else? 200 1988

Finally going to have to do this on my new project car.
I plan to pull the heater core and have it cleaned and tested at a rad shop, I don't like what I hear about the aftermarket one's but don't want to just leave it with so many years and miles on it.
The heater control valve, is there any fixing to the original style? I don't have one handy to look out but I am not crazy about the plastic current one's either, it works as it is but again it's old.

Other than replacing clips and bulbs and checking the flapper vacuum pods and such, anything else to do while in there?
