aw71 trans. occasionly slips out of gear 700 1986

my 1986 volvo 740 gle with the AW-71 trans has an intermittent issue lately:

every so often i would be driving and everything shifts beautifully but if i am to slow down it will seem like it has popped out of gear and after about a few seconds everything will be fine after a bump. the trans pan was dented a few months ago so it has been making a slight whine but all is well. like the one mechanic i had look at it(he knows his stuff) said: if it were a major issue you would know it well by now. im just puzzled. im wondering if maybee changing the pan, filter and adding some lucas in there will remedy the issue. there is lucas in there already. all shifting is excellent in all gears. on occasion i always have to take the od off than on a few times and the sluggishness will be eliminated but thats the way its been for years now.

any suggestions? is the trans worth saving or should i just run it to the ground and get another 740?

geoff
