Engine dies, check engine light after engine swap 700

Hello

Tried the search engine but could not find anything specific....

I just installed an 87 engine in my 91 740 NA, the check engine light is on, the car runs OK but every now and then will stall and not start back....the speedo is not working but sometimes the speedo jumps around...I also have a 1987 rear axel and have not connected the speedo sensor back up. Suspects are the crank position sensor...what else? I am thinking about trying another ECU and have a CPS on order. Could the overrun due to no speedo signal cause the o2 sensor to throw the check engine light? Getting ready to drive cross country and getting nervous...

Also the car is hard to start, have to crank a while with the throttle open....vacuum leak?

Thanks

Al
