Radio AM noise on BOTH my wagons with new radios 700

I recently replaced my radios on both my wagons with a Sony deck. Both are the same decks. One wagon has a working power antena and the other has a rubber type replacement. Both original radios work great on AM
They were profesionally installed and they used the Metra kit. They work fine on FM and AM and with all other functions. The only problem is when you are going faster than about 40mph the AM only will get a passing interference sound like the station is getting lost.
These are very strong stations and should not have reception problems. Almost sounds like built up static discharging.
Any ideas before I go yell at the installers? Is it the car or the radios?
Wagons are a '90 and '92. AUTO, non turbo
