The only problem with washing down the engine besides getting things wet in the ignition system is what you use as a chemical wash.
Things that emulsify oils and attract dirt attack other things made from petroleum products. Examples are rubber and plastics or varying formulations. My most concern goes to the wiring harnesses and the concoctions laying in the sheathing over time and engine heating.
Anything that works fast and easy is probably harsh. A mild cleaner, say hair shampoo for oily hair or biodegradables, take more time and effort with unknown consequences too.
Being careful about strength and rinsing well as you mentioned are good tactics. Avoid areas that can trap or hold the solutions. Be prepared to allow time for the product to do its job and you, to do yours.
Just do not fly through it and shut the hood. That just cooks or steams things.
Anything you can blow off or out with compressed air is good. Wipe things down, all kinds of hoses, all types of wires prolong their life. This will include any painted items, as they are petroleum products too.
