new alternator doesn't fit 200 1990

Hello all. My car is the 1990 240dl wagon. My alternator is kaput so I pulled one at the junkyard from a 1992 240 sedan. Took it home and bolted it in, only to find that all of the wires don't match up. the fat red wire with a washer at the end has a too-small washer and won't fit on the post on the new alternator. do i need a new set of wires? can i just splice on a new washer? do i have to go out and pull another alternator? or am i just doing it wrong? thanks
