This car has seen very little use in the last few years as it was used by my mother. She gave up driving and I am going through it at this time.
The brake pedal seemed a little soft with more travel than I am used to in our Volvos. Inspection revealed new pads would be in order.
The rear pads came out with no problem and the pistons were easily pushed back. The front calipers each had at least on piston that would not retract so I ordered rebuilt calipers from my local supplier.
While I waited overnight for the calipers to come in I flushed the system. I use Castrol LMA and ran almost a quart through the system using a reservoir cap with a schrader valve and a bicycle pump.
I picked up the calipers this morning. I pulled them out of their boxes at the counter and verified they were the correct ones and that I had both a left and right caliper. I also checked that the punch marks were correct and the bleeders were good. The line attachment points had the crown for each line. Good to go!
After installing the front calipers and all the new pads I gave the pedal a few short strokes to bring the pads into contact with the rotor. This was the first time the pedal had been touched since pulling the components. I was careful to not push the pedal very far until it started to firm up.
At this point I have to give the pedal a couple of strokes before it wants to firm up but once I do that and try to hold pressure it starts a slow descent to toward the floor. This seems like classic master cylinder failure but I am at a loss as to the sudden change in the behavior.
Any thoughts on what caused this? I am stumped.
Randy
EDIT: I have owned this car for 15 years and as far as I know the master cylinder is the original (it has had regular system flushes). I just called and I can get a rebuilt one for $30. Even the counter man was amazed at the price. This is a local auto supply that I have done business with for 35 years and they carry good stuff- supplying a lot of the local independent garages. At that price I just had them get me one- here by 4:00PM.
