tips on removing old rusty O2 sensor? 1991 240

Some of you who have been helping me, thanks very much, will know that I have been trying to determine the cause of my problems with rough idle, hesitation, and CEL, and now with error codes 2-3-2, 1-1-3. I have cleaned TB and MAF, replaced hoses and oil separator box, new intake manifold gasket, etc. Unrelated, I have also replaced the odometer gear- yea!

As part of my new-found interest in working on my Volvo, I bought a pair of ramps and finally got under the car today (outside gravel parking space- whew! still tight under there!). Yes, I also used rear chocks :-)

I don't know how old the O2 sensor is, but the photo below tells you something of its condition. Even though it may not be _necessary_ to replace it and it probably is not the _source_ of my problem, I'd like to replace it for peace of mind. You can see it is pretty rusted, and the metal tubing has separated from the base.

Advice on how to proceed? I have read posts suggesting using SB Blaster (penetrating oil spray) for a few days prior to attempting removal. Should I attempt to scrape the rust off first? How can I best avoid damaging the catalytic converter? Any particualr tool to use?

I have read several BB posts which recommend using the less expensive 13942 O2 sensor ($40) rather than the 13034 $100) recommended for my car. Can you confirm that the 13942 will work fine, is a 3-wire type, and will thread correctly?

Thanks,
Keith Ostertag
