Vapor Canister hose disconnected 900

I started working on my '94 940 turbo this weekend to bring it to stage zero and found an interesting problem...one of the two large rubber hoses that go to the large vapor canister (driver's side, right behind the radiator) was not connected to anything and was simply hanging there, presumably dumping fumes. On my to-do list is a rework of the PCV system and it looks like I need to address this guy as well. What exactly is the function of this canister and, more importantly, how essential is this hose connection and where does it go? Thanks in advance!

Brian
