240 Rear Wheel Bearings - What Grease Type?!?!?!?! 200

Thank you for this thread and posts. Sorry to change the thread title.

Somewhere, someplace, I had read the Volvo 240 rear wheel bearings are bathed in differential oil. This was years ago someplace. Oh how wrong that was.

Thank you, transit wind. Your post is like a brisk stiff slap in my face, a boiling hot cup of espresso, a Midwestern tornado siren wailing in such ways it can't be ignored under a blackening sly.

Even in the much maligned Haynes manual, it makes mention repacking the rear wheel bearings with grease. Right in front of my face for years. I'd not ever futzed with the 240,260 rear wheel axles and bearings. Oh how stupid I am.

Oh, dung heap, boy oh boy I feel like a big dumb bunny (eatin' cabbage and makin' raisins for a kind of slaw).

So, what kind of grease? I'd been using the Volvo wheel bearing grease (Volvo PN 1161241) that comes in an 80g tube (one tube for each wheel bearing on the tube label I have right here). So, from that line, I guess it is all the same grease for front and rear Volvo 240 bearings.

For the last three-four years I moved on up to the AMSOIL "Multi-Purpose SYNTHETIC GREASE" with the byline "HIGH TEMPERATURE, EXTREME PRESSURE" for the front wheel bearings.

The 14 oz/397 gram tube is AMSOIL product code of GLC-CR, an NLGI #2 lithium complex.

How much differential fluid leaks out?

How often an interval? Inspect and service all four wheel bearings simultaneously?

The garage I rent may be to narrow to pull out the axle half if indeed a rear wheel bearing assembly requires service (with one of the Volvo 240 Warriors Three I own). I have access to a machine shop with presses and such.

Though I hope you and all others read this most critical post and perform a rear wheel bearing inspection and service (with a big phat fresh grease re-packing).

And of course, rear brake and parking brake inspection and service!

transit wind, thank you again.

MacDuff.
