Suddenly acceleration is extremely loud; exhaust vs. engine trouble? 200 1989

So I was backing out of a parking spot in my 1989 Volvo 240 DL Wagon, shifted into drive, and heard a "clunk" followed by extremely loud engine noise (almost painfully loud for me while sitting in the driver's seat). The noise greatly decreases in volume when I stop accelerating, regardless of speed, but increases in volume when accelerating while going up a hill. I haven't noticed any difference in mechanical performance, although it did seem slightly more difficult to accelerate. This may be the last straw for this car if it's a major repair; I really don't want to sell or replace it but I can't afford to keep on making major repairs, now that rust has started to take hold in the doors and wheel wells. Tell me I don't have to give it up just yet?
