Suddenly acceleration is extremely loud; exhaust vs. engine trouble? 200 1989

It could just be a popped joint of the exhaust system, possibly a clamp or seam of a muffler.
The first joint below the exhaust manifold is a lower header pipe gasket joint. It would be the “loudest” because all four of the engine cylinders exhaust collect and blow out right there.

If it is there, it is not hard to change and the gasket is inexpensive. Probably did not have anything to do with you backing up.

It was just the last cool down, which finished it off. It can happen anytime to anything, even the new stuff!
