I know the motor mounts are a weak point. I think Volvo designed them to shear off in an accident so the engine would submarine rather than come into the cabin.
Here in Australia, people tend to replace them with Datsun 240Z mounts which have some sort of inbuilt retainer to stop them shearing under rough conditions. We also chain them (top to bottom) so if the still fail, the chain stops the motor falling off. I've heard that Landrover mounts are used in the UK for the same reason.
