Hey guys! Some 7 years ago, I purchased an '89 240 wagon with 113K on the clock. Second owner who was a "nut" about volvos. I left him messages on the car and one day he called and sold the thing to me. It's in near mint condition. Interior is flawless, all original, tan. Exterior is alpine white. I have several cars (23-25 at any given time) and just didn't want to put this one into service right away. The time has come to do just that and I've been working on getting her ready for daily driver use. As I began to get her service ready, I just couldn't seem to get her started. The main fuel pump made some noise, but the plugs were dry upon visual inspection. I finally went to the u pull it here in town and found a brand new Bosch pump on a car and put that on. Wow! now she really hums from under the car like she should and I got fuel to the injectors and she finally started. Yea! In the meantime, I of course pumped out the 7 year old fuel from the tank and filled her with fresh when the new pump was installed. I have a new problem that I can't seem to figure out, and tonight, it got as bad as it ever has been. It's a stumble or hesitation that pretty much keeps the car from gaining any speed. For a block or two when started, she runs fine and as to be expected. Shortly thereafter, she begins to stumble and hesitate, like it's running on 2 cylinders. I have to pull over and tonight, it was almost impossible to get any rpms up no matter how I feathered the pedal. Here's what I've done:
1) New main fuel pump; 2) New fuel filter installed; 3) Brand new marine 30 amp fuse holder and fuse from battery to fuel pump (the one that many people have problems with on the fender of driver's side); 4) new Bosch Platinum plugs; 5) new wires to the main fuel pump as the yellow and black wires were without insulation; 5) cleaned battery terminals and installed strong battery; I think that when I purchased it, as I do with all my 240's, I immediately installed new timing belt, water pump etc. I probably changed out the flame trap, but I'll have to look. My factory parts box is huge and has scores of new parts that I purchase along the way in multiples. I guess from looking at the threads I need to look at the MAS, the IAC and should probably replace the factory volvo ignition wires, though they look great. Any chance this could be a fuel pressure regulator? I'd really appreciate a steer in the right direction as I need to get this car reliable. At the moment, it's clearly not and I couldn't even make it two blocks away tonight.
Thanks!
