AW70 transmission mystery problem 200

About 1500 miles ago, my 1985 240 suffered a broken kick-down cable.I ordered a nice OEM replacement and installed it,adjusted it,and it worked fine.I drove to Tucson for christmas, and on the way back to SoCal,the car suddenly would not shift out of first gear.Thank God I had AAA to tow me the 98 miles to my home.
Naturally, I figured this was a problem with my kick-down cable, because the symptoms were exactly the same as when the old one broke.I tried adjusting it to both extremes, but it still would not shift out of first gear,so, I thought it had probably come loose in the trans, yet it still had spring tension on the throttle end.I finally got around to dropping the pan on the trans today, and the cable appears to be normal and fine.
Does anyone have any ideas or theories as to what the problem might be?
Thank you
