Fried instrument cluster leading to drained battery? 200 1991

I didn't want to bring back an old thread and they were all slightly different from my problem anyways so here it goes.

Yesterday I plugged in the tach wire to the bottom right (over drive section I believe) of my instrument cluster and fried it. Today I went to drive but my battery was fully drained. I have needed a new battery for sometime so I figured it was as good of time as any to buy a new one.

Once the new battery was installed it ran perfect for about 6 hours and then shut off while driving. The brand new battery was dead past the point of being boosted. I took the battery and charged it at home, brought it back and drove the car home no problem.

I'm 99% sure that the problem is being caused by the fried cluster because as I said it happened the morning after I fried it and has never been a problem before.

Two main questions I have;
1.
is this even possible? I read about how the alternator makes a circuit with 4 of the warning lights but no one seemed 100% sure if it could drain the battery.

2.
How can I stop it from happening again.

UPDATE: I have fixed my cluster but am still curious about the problem, I will let you know tomorrow if my battery holds its charge.
