Replacing windshield and repairing rust outdoors in winter? 200

I am reading lots of BB posts concerning replacing the windshield. Since I am anticipating rust problems, I guess I will need to remove the windshield myself, do the rust repair, then have the mobile guys install the new windshield. I see many BB posters recommend POR-15 which I can get on eBay (starter kit seems adequate), along with POR BlackCote. I'm guessing that I could do the windshield removal one day, cover overnight, then the rust repair the second day, cover and wait for the mobile guys to install.

Here are some questions: can I do this now outside in this weather? I don't have a garage. In other words, how will the temperature affect the application, curing or adhesion of the POR-15 and BlackCote? Should I wait until Spring because of how the weather will affect the materials?

Do I understand correctly that, since the rust areas are under the windshield gasket, if there are holes to fill with mesh that the bumps will be hidden and not a problem?

Any suggestions welcome, I have never done body work/rust repair before. I think I saw some posts recommend other products than the POR, but I can't put my finger on them immediately...

Many of the BB posts I have read are a few years old... perhaps there are newer tools and materials now available that you would recommend? Especially for the windshield removal.
