81 242 Temp Gauge reads too low 200 1981

81 242 My temp gauge started reading lower than normal. Usually it would always point to about 9:00 when warm. Suddenly it started pointing to about 7:30 instead of 9:00. I checked the thermostat. It opens at 180 degrees and closes down right away when removed from a pot of 180-degree water. Is there a way to check the coolant temp sensor from the main computer on the passenger firewall or do I need to pull it to check it? Isn't there a small voltage regulator on the back of the cluster that could cause this symptom? Any help would be really appreciated.
