The coil wire--inside 444-544 1958

just to add my coin: the steel shielding around the cable was meant as protection against theft. By the time these cars were built there was no steering lock, no anti theft alarm. So, building the coil and keylock in one unit served as protection against ripping out the cable and shorting the ignition.
And yes, I think you can use any 6V coil available. Have done it a couple of times
in the past.
