air mass flow meter 200 1995

hey all you volvo freaks i need help!!!! i have a 1995 240 that will not start. if i run the fuel pump by bypassing the fuel pump relay at the fuse box the car starts and runs fine until i pull the jumper wire from fuses 1 and 4.i'm pulling up an airmass flow meter code from the ecu. i checked the meter as instructed in the bentley and it seemed to check out fine. if this meter was bad would it prevent the engine from starting by shutting down the fuel pumps? i know the fuel pump relay is good. thanks for any help!!
