Charging system questions. 200 1990

I am new to owning a Volvo, so Im not really used to them. A few weeks ago, I bought a 1990 240 DL wagon that had been sitting for almost 9 months. One of the issues with it was that it would not charge. I put a new battery in it when I bought it, as the old one was trashed. When I discovered that it wasn't charging, I jumped the gun and replaced the alternator without taking the old one to be tested. Well, now I have a new alternator and its still not charging. I have checked all the wires going to the alternator, and everything tested ok. I get voltage to the exciter wire when ignition is turned on, volts light comes on with key, ground cable is okay, I even ran a new ground to be sure. No change. All the fuses appear okay, so I really don't know what else I should check.
Also, it seems like it will occasionally charge a bit if left to idle.
Thanks in advance for any input!
-Ethan
