transmission dipstick 900 1997

Hello All:

When I checked the HOT engine on my '97 960 while in neutral the level of ATF was at the "cold" level, so I figured I didn't have enough fluid in there. But when I checked the COLD engine this morning, the level was up to the "hot" level on the other side of the dipstick. I'm confused. Does this mean I have way too much ATF in my transmission or not enough? A Volvo mechanic put the fluid in a few years ago. I don't seem to be having any trouble with the transmission. I was just checking it. Thanks.
