Diagnosing check engine light 200

A buddy of mine told me that there were instructions for diagnosing what is causing the check engine light to remain on in the owners manual. I looked through it pretty thoroughly and found nothing. The only thing it said about diagnosing the check engine light was to bring it to a certified mechanic. Where can I get the information on performing this diagnostic process myself?

Thanks for any help!

This is for my 1990 240 wagon
