Temperature gauge 700

Hello,
I have a 1988 740 turbo wagon. Recently my temperature gauge will get up to operating temp. but after driving for a while the gauge will start to move to about half operating temp. and there it kind of flickers up and down. This happens regularly now but sometimes not at all. Does this sound like the engine is fluctuating in temperature or something going screwy with the gauge?
(Some things worth mentioning; rpm gauge will sometimes give high readings until I smack the dash board. Temp. gauge will rarely need a smack as well to give any reading. Also recently needed to drain and refill the radiator.)
Any help is appreciated,
Thank you,
Benton
