How long can an engine run being overheated?? 900 1992

My daughter's 92 740 overheated. I don't know if the thermostat stuck or the waterpump conked out (both are 6 months old) or the electric fan stopped..she is in Houston,TX and I am in Austin. Will travel tomorrow to find out.
Since her rented condo will not allow car repair on premises, I would like to know of any reputable independent Volvo mechanic in the Houston area (especially downtown).
