Yet another 240 brake light problem. 200 1991

I bought a 1991 sedan yesterday for a great price. My first volvo since I totaled my 78 242 in 1990. I am happy to have a 240 again. I have searched the boards for my particular problem with no luck.

My first problem is I am not sure what the lights are supposed to look like when lit (driving with lights on vs. braking). Which are the running lights and which are the brake lights.

On to the problem. When I got the car, was told the left brake lights were not working, though the turn signal was.

I fiddled with it today, and got the inner and outer lights to go on (and match the other side for running lights. Only problem was the outer light is always bright, so the passenger side reacts as it should with the brake pressed.

The bulb failure light is constant when the lights are on, if they are off it goes one when I press the brake.

Any assistance the board can offer would be appreciated.
