Up-arrow light on dash 700 1992

Normally when I'd press the button on the side of the (automatic) gearshift, the green up-arrow light would light on the dash and the transmission wouldn't shift up onto overdrive or 4th gear, or whatever. It's supposedly for pulling heavy trailers for extended periods and I used it a year ago to haul a yard of gravel, but don't bother for light loads.

Anyway, now when I push the button there's no arrow and it doesn't downshift. I did get the arrow to come on once when stopped an I put it into first gear, but not in any other position, but now it won't come on at all. Anybody know why? I'm getting about 2500 rpm at 100 km/h (4.10 axle), which I think is normal, or is it?
